Voices of the Aquifer

Your Water. Your Story. Your Voice.

Your Mission is Our Mission at Earthwater Coalition

Across the country, communities are experiencing changes in their water; declining well levels, concerns about contamination, and the growing presence of industrial water use. But many of these stories go unheard.

We want to change that.

Earthwater Coalition is inviting individuals and families to share their experiences with water in their communities, whether it has impacted your health, your property, or your peace of mind.

Your voice matters. And your story could help others better understand what’s happening beneath the surface.

In addition to sharing stories, we are working to connect individuals with educational resources and, where possible, opportunities for water testing through university-led research initiatives.

We Want to Hear From You

If you’ve ever wondered:

• Why your water has changed

• What might be in your drinking water

• Or how industrial activity may be affecting your area

We want to hear from you.

Share Your Story

We have the water, but if we don't manage it well, then we won't.

Dr. Chen Zhu

PhD

Dr. Chen Zhu is a geochemist whose research explores the chemical interactions between groundwater, minerals, and the Earth’s geological systems.

Dr. Chen Zhu, PhD

Research Focus

Dr. Chen Zhu is a geochemist and professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington whose research explores the chemistry of water as it moves through the Earth. His work focuses on how groundwater interacts with minerals and rocks—processes that are crucial for aquifer protection, shape water quality, and influence the movement of elements through the environment. This research is vital for environmental health and helps scientists understand the hidden chemistry of aquifers beneath our feet. By studying the chemical and isotopic signatures that water acquires underground, Dr. Zhu and his team can enhance groundwater education, trace groundwater flow, and reveal the reactions taking place deep within geological systems.

Scientific Contributions

Using a combination of field observations, laboratory experiments, and advanced geochemical modeling, Dr. Zhu investigates fundamental Earth processes such as chemical weathering, mineral formation, and the cycling of elements between the hydrosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. His research also addresses major environmental challenges, including groundwater sustainability and aquifer protection, as well as the potential for safely storing carbon dioxide in geological formations through carbon sequestration. Additionally, his work contributes to environmental health and promotes groundwater education to ensure sustainable practices.

Recognition & Leadership

Dr. Zhu’s contributions to geochemistry and hydrogeology have earned international recognition, particularly in the areas of aquifer protection and environmental health. As a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Geological Society of America, he has also been honored as a Henry Darcy Distinguished Lecturer by The Groundwater Foundation. Through decades of research, teaching, and scientific leadership, he continues to enhance groundwater education and advance our understanding of groundwater systems and the chemical processes that shape Earth’s water resources.

Dr. Gabriel M Filippelli is an environmental scientist working to understand and reduce pollution exposure in communities through geochemistry and public health research.

Dr. Gabriel Filippelli, PhD

Research Focus

Gabriel M. Filippelli is a biogeochemist and Chancellor’s Professor of Earth Sciences at Indiana University whose work explores how chemical elements move through Earth’s environment and how those processes impact environmental health. His research focuses on the cycling of elements in air, water, soil, and sediments, with particular attention to pollutants such as lead and mercury in urban environments. By combining geochemical analysis, environmental monitoring, and field research, Dr. Filippelli studies how contaminants accumulate in cities and examines the implications for aquifer protection and groundwater education, particularly regarding how people are exposed to these harmful substances.

Scientific Contributions

Dr. Filippelli’s research bridges earth science and public health, aiding communities in understanding and reducing environmental exposure to harmful pollutants. His work has mapped lead contamination in urban soils and linked environmental lead levels to elevated lead exposure in children, enhancing awareness of environmental health risks. Through community-based science initiatives focused on aquifer protection and groundwater education, he has partnered with residents, schools, and local organizations to collect environmental samples and provide actionable information that can improve public health and environmental safety.

Recognition & Leadership

A widely respected leader in environmental health, Dr. Filippelli serves as Executive Director of the Indiana University Environmental Resilience Institute and Director of the Center for Urban Health. He has authored hundreds of scientific publications focusing on topics such as aquifer protection and groundwater education, and has served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal GeoHealth. His career has also included national service as a Jefferson Science Fellow advising the U.S. Department of State, along with numerous honors including a Fulbright Distinguished Chair and fellowship in the International Association of Geochemistry.
